Modeling Sedimentary Structures using Non Uniform Rational B-Splines.

in: Proc. 33rd Gocad Meeting, Nancy

Abstract

In this article, we perform an object-based modeling of sedimentary structures quantitatively. In particular, we aim at providing a flexible and compact object model capable of representing most sedimentary structures at different scales. Geo-bodies are defined by a boundary representation; each bounding surface is constructed as a parametric deformable surface. We propose a 3D sedimentary object with a compact parametrization which allows for representing various geometries and provides a curvilinear framework for modeling internal heterogeneities. This representation is based on Non-uniform rational basis splines (NURBS) which consist in a smooth interpolation between a set of points [Piegl and Tiller, 1995]. NURBS are interesting for modeling abundant sedimentary structures because they can be edited with a small number of parameters and have a small storage footprint and interactive computation times. As an example, this method is applied to generate 3D training images.
