Abstract

Building 3D models of geological structures relies on the constrained interpolation between available georeferenced geological data. Different interpolation methods are possible, but existing constraints are generally limited to value or orientation of stratigraphy at a set of locations. Other structural information, e.g. fold axes orientation, fold axial surfaces geometries an fold overprinting relationship, are difficult to incorporate in these schemes. This paper presents a set of constraints for controlling the geometry of implicit surfaces with fold structural parameters (axial surface, fold axis orientation, axial surface foliation field and vergence). This makes it possible to model poly-deformed terranes by progressively going backward in time. Each folding event is represented by a set of scalar and vector fields. Most recent fold events are modeled first, which helps interpolating the geometry of older folds. This process enables the building of 3D geological models of complex poly-deformed terranes by using a modeling process similar to the structural geologist approach, and produces geomodels that honor both structural data and geological knowledge.
