Bridging the gap between the Geostatistics Template library and Gocad. Application to non-scalar values on unstructured grids.

Abstract

Unstructured grids are gaining significant interest in the geosciences community, thanks to the recent development of geologically-constrained griding algorithms. Yet, efficient interpolation of values on unstructured meshes remains a challenge. Discrete Smooth Interpolation has proven its effectiveness in a number of applications, but one may still prefer kriging, for instance to easily account for anisotropy. The Geostatistics Template Library (GsTL) makes up an appealing framework to implement geostatistical algorithms on unstructured grids. Combining this generic library with the Gocad development platform, a new kriging implementation for triangulated surfaces and tetrahedral grids is proposed. This method is applied to the interpolation of directional data, a first step to model locally varying anisotropy.
