3D display of properties for unstructured grids.

in: Proc. 23rd Gocad Meeting, Nancy

Abstract

Visualizing volumetric data on a screen is a particularly challenging task in Computer Graphics. It implies both interactively managing larger and larger volumes of data and extracting meaningful information. This paper describes a new implementation of the CIEL method to render volume data. It optimizes existing isosurfaces extraction as well as direct volume rendering techniques for all kinds of unstructured grids. We focus on some examples of applications of such advanced tools in the field of Geosciences. Finally, an extension of this visualization kit via 3D texture mapping makes it possible to visualize high resolution properties on coarse unstructured grids. Among other applications, this last feature is particularly powerful in sedimentary geology and reservoir modeling.
