Visualization of geological surfaces within a web browser.
in: 35th Gocad Meeting - 2015 RING Meeting, ASGA
Abstract
Geological models of the subsurface are built for industrial, scientific and pedagogic uses. They are often constructed using commercial software whose file formats are not compatible. File format conversion can be tedious and time consuming and model users do not always have software licenses. This is an obstacle to models broadcasting. This paper proposes a new solution to render structural models in a web browser without any third party software, using only HTML5 and Javascript features. Web browsers are ubiquitous software offering a cross-platform way to visualize 3D scenes on computers and on mobile devices. Large models can still be displayed efficiently thanks to the WebGL technology providing access to hardware acceleration. The method is particularly interesting to communicate results and models through web sites or when a geomodeling software is not available.
