Abstract

Understanding and modeling sedimentary structures such as channels and tectonic structures such as faults is often essential for making reliable reservoir flow predictions. When channels are affected by faults, the resulting flow prediction is greatly impacted by the intersection characteristics. This work focuses on improving channel modeling in folded and faulted reservoirs. In order to do so, undeformed channels are first modeled by volumetric NURBS, which allows to choose precisely their geometry in a space where all isochron horizons are flat. Then, the intersections between the faults and the channels are computed in order to modify the channels geometry precisely. Finally, rendering the discontinuous effects of faults is done by cutting and displacing the resulting channel parts independently and according to the reservoir deformation. This is done by adding and displacing interpolation points of the parametric surfaces bounding the channel objects. As a result, the channels geometries can be transferred from depositional space to the present day physical space, honouring both the effects of folds and faults.
