Progressive triangulated surfaces in Gocad.

Abstract

Manipulating, visualizing and transmitting efficiently large triangulated surfaces can be greatly improved by multi-resolution approaches. In this paper, we describe and compare two methods for decimating triangulated surfaces and defining several levels of detail on a surface. The first one, a valence-based mesh compression method, is concerned with maintaining the combinatorial quality of the mesh as much as possible during simplification. The second approach, known as progressive meshes, is based on a succession of elementary operations and is more suitable for multi-resolution surfaces.
