3D geological surface model repair: application to restored models

Abstract

Sequential restoration of an initially sealed geological model typically breaks its validity. Con- formal volumetric remeshing in the restored state is, therefore, very challenging. In this paper we propose a method that repairs invalid restored geological models. The input of our method is a geo- logical model on which geological features are identified. A tolerance within which the output model is built is associated to this invalid model. The output of the proposed method is a topologically and geologically valid model. By topologically valid, we mean that the model is a valid boundary representation (B-Rep) model with conformable surfaces and watertight regions. By geologically valid, we mean that the model has no free horizon border and no layer overlap. We first resample the input model surface boundaries and reconstruct a valid wire-frame version of the geological model. The surfaces of the model are then remeshed using an advancing front algorithm. The entities of the input model are resampled together, which implies that our method automatically removes, splits and clusters some elements to seal the model. We show some preliminary results of simple restored model repair. Repaired models could be used to generate a volumetric mesh which clears the path of thermo-hydro-mechanical modeling on paleo structural geometries.
