Open-source geosciences visualization microservice: combining {OpenGeode} and {VTK}

Abstract

Geological data rely on complex geometrical and topological representations. Visualizing these data can be challenging without expensive proprietary software. To address this issue, we propose an open-source microservice that combines two popular open-source packages: OpenGeode and VTK. It relies on the OpenGeode framework for representing and manipulating geometric models and brings it to VTK to benefit from its well-known ability to display scientific data. Our microservice is a simple and accessible solution that facilitates the adaptation and conversion of geological data from classical files format to be loaded by the VTK graphic engine. The microservice proposes a unified interface with a single entry point for every type of data and simplifies the combined use of both software. It can be integrated into several types of applications, including web, cloud, or desktop applications. The microservice currently supports all the data available in the OpenGeode framework (e.g. unstructured meshes, wells, structural models, maps, and textured surfaces).
