Abstract

Today, web browsers are universally available on various devices, offering standardized access to the underlying host, supporting peripherals such as threading, GPU, and file system access, and interpreting multiple programming languages. These advancements, coupled with continuous hardware progress, create an ideal environment for the YouWol platform. YouWol is an elastic, collaborative, and plug \& play ecosystem centered around a collection of 'ready-to-use' libraries and applications. By leveraging dynamic bindings and the ability to combine different programming languages into executables, YouWol enables the creation of innovative and flexible applications in the domain of geosciences. Additionally, the platform opens up significant opportunities for developers in computational sciences by allowing the reuse of established algorithms (e.g., Fortran, C, C++). Positioned between cloud platforms and personal computers, YouWol combines the accessibility of online services and applications for geoscientists with the ability to leverage the hardware of users' devices through browser-based execution.
