Abstract
Seismic images are frequently used to build geological models. A proper interpretation of seismic images should take into account uncertainties on the position of reflectors. To assess these seismic uncertainties, illumination maps can be a useful tool. Illumination maps are built on reflectors obtained from a given seismic interpretation. The Illumination map of a reflector represents the seismic energy reflected off the horizon and recorded at receivers; it is therefore a measure on how much confidence should be expected from seismic data to image the reflector accurately. Ray- based illumination maps require to determine the reflection points of every source-receiver pair in a seismic campaign. This paper is the first of a series attempting to describe the implementation of 3D ray-based illumination maps and their applications in assessing structural uncertainties from seismic interpretation. This particular paper focuses on ray-tracing in isotropic media.
