A 3D Model of the North German Basin - Aims and Challenges.

Abstract

Within the new project “Subsurface Potentials for Storage and Economic Use in the North German Basin” a 3D model of the North German Basin will be constructed over the next six years. As a first step the North German State Geological Surveys will construct a structural model for their respective region. The Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources (BGR) will coordinate these efforts and finally merge these models into a model of the entire North German Basin. As a second step the BGR and its project partners intend to parameterize the model and construct volume-based models for selected regions which can be used for further investigations. In our contribution we want to give a general introduction to the new project and then discuss some different challenges we face. For example, the models of the different State Geological Surveys need to fit with each other at the state’s borders (geologically, geometrically and topologically). Further, some work within the project will require the use of other software, such as Petrel and 3D Move, so that we will need to handle the data across different data structures, software systems and institutions.
