Review of mechanics-based restoration

in: The Geology of Geomechanics, The Geological Society

Abstract

Restoration is a process to recover the geometric configuration of rocks in the past before tectonics deformations. It was introduced by Chamberlin [1910] and formalized on cross-section by Dahlstrom [1969]. It was firstly based on geometric assumptions such as layer area conservation or constant horizon length and developed on cross-sections, surface horizons and volumetric models [e.g. Chamberlin, 1910, Dahlstrom, 1969, Muron, 2005]. For the last ten years, mechanics-based restoration has been developed [Muron, 2005]. This abstract proposes a review of mechanics-based restoration. The main interests of restoration are: get the geometry of a geological model before deformations, validate the consistency of an initial model and predict potential fracture areas.
