Abstract
Although geological fractured media are known for holding a continuous distribution of fracture length, classical effective medium theories for seismic wave propagation rely on the assumption that fractures are much smaller than the seismic wavelength. To go beyond this assumption and investigate the effective elastic properties of multi-scale fractured media, this study considers the non-periodic homogenization method. First, the theory behind the method is recalled, which emphasizes the absence of constraints on the size, the shape and the contrast of the heterogeneities. Then, preliminary numerical experiments are conducted to compare non-periodic homogenization results with effective media obtained from more classical theories, in the simple case of small elliptical inclusions with a unique orientation, varying in turn the fracture length and the aspect ratio. In both experiments, the homogenized stiffness is close to the classical estimates and follows, in each regime, the scheme that is physically relevant: the differential and self-consistent schemes for flat fractures, where the elastic interactions between fractures cannot be neglected, and the non-interaction approximation, which is known to be relevant for wave propagation, together with Mori-Tanaka for more open fractures. These preliminary results pave the way for further experiments in which additional parameters can be varied, in particular the fracture length distribution.
