Abstract
In this work, we propose a new formulation of the potential field method (PFM), an implicit geomodelling method based on geostatistics. This new formulation uses the stochastic partial differential equation (SPDE) approach. As compared to the traditional covariance-based approach, the computation time is independent of the number of data in the SPDE approach which makes it much more suited to face the big n problem. For a given set of modelling parameters, the comparison of the geomodels produced with both approaches emphasizes that - while yielding similar geometries - the SPDE approach is faster, especially as the amount of data
