Structural model simplification during surface remeshing: geometrical and geological criteria.

Abstract

In this article we propose to use geometrical and geological criteria to consistently simplify geological structural models when remeshing their surfaces. These simplifications permit to ensure that the remeshed model is valid. The input is a set of badly triangulated surfaces which represents the interfaces between rock volumes in the area of interest. These surfaces are remeshed at a prescribed resolution with triangles. Simplifications are performed by merging and deleting some of the vertices of the final triangular mesh. We propose three simplifications: (1) a fault extremity simplification where the fault extremities are suppressed, (2) a fault displacement simplification where the displacement of a fault is removed, and (3) a stratigraphy simplification where the thin layers are removed.
