Abstract

The efficient management of the ever increasing amounts of highly complex geo-scientific data that accumulate in today's prospect projects becomes a vital shortage in to date project management. Extensive use of geo-databases could be a means to encounter this issue. In this paper we shortly examine the geometric, topological and net-structure-related capabilities of an open source geo-database that is widely used in the GIS community (the PostgreSQL/PostGIS server) for its suitability in subsurface modeling environments. We then present the architecture and some usage examples of our approach to this issue, which is a web-based database for geo-scienific data, called DB4GeO. DB4GeO is capable of importing, exporting, storing and processing geo-objects in the well-known Gocad R formats, such as VSet, PLine, Well, TSurf and TSolid. Apart from Gocad R objects, DB4GeO is able to manage simplexbased spatial data created by other programs due to its abstract data model. Once the objects are stored in DB4GeO, the data can be retrieved in various file formats such as GML. The data are easily accessed and manipulated via HTTP-based web services. DB4GeO offers two possibilities for remote data access: a REST-based solution to access the objects by a simple indication of a URL; an ongoing implementation of the Web Feature Service (WFS) to access the geo-object via the common standard developed by the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC). Additionally, a geo-scientific model can be visualized directly in a modern web browser in WebGL representation. Finally, an outlook is given on future research work on DB4GeO.
