Abstract

The Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico, contains some of the most developed karst systems in the world. The Ox Bel’Ha Karst system, in the south east of the peninsula, hosts the main sustainable water resources of the region. However it is now threatened by the rapid economic development of the nearby city of Tulum. A new optical device has been used to capture the conduit shape variations along some conduits. This work aims to test two approaches for conduit reconstruction from the sparse laser data set obtained from the conduits. The first approach is the object-distance simulation method (ODSIM). A method has been developed to adapt the data set to the Gibbs sampler used in ODSIM. The second approach is a new method, based on the interpolation of a NURBS surface to fit the data. If both approaches have long computation times, only ODSIM manages to fit all the data. Indeed the second approach faces unsolved issues with the interpolation function with such a high number of data. Thus, further work is needed to ensure the applicability of the methods. Some objective comparison of the computational efficiency and the data fit should be done to analyze the performance of both approaches more deeply.
