Multiscale visualisation and interpretation of Digital Outcrop Models.

Abstract

The use of digital outcrop models (DOMs) in geological studies has increased during the past decades. Lidar or photogrammetric data which constitute DOMs, typically correspond to huge datasets hard to handle and to interpret. The goal of this study is to combined the geomodeling software Gocad with OpenSceneGraph (OSG), a 3D graphics application programming interface. A geomodeling application as Gocad would allow to visualise and interpret DOMs and OSG’s management of levels of detail would enable to exploit the full potential of those high resolution data brought by digital outcrop models. Management of huge datasets have been incorporated in Gocad through the creation of a new Gocad object which encapsulates an OSG scene graph. At the same time some of Gocad interpretation tools as picking have been adapted to enable their use on data handled by OSG. Encountered issues with the implementation of the communication between the two applications will be discussed and possible improvements will also be presented.
