Stochastic Modeling Of Turbidite Bodies: An Application In The APIUNA TURBIDITIC COMPLEX

Abstract

Three-dimensional volumetric models have great importance aiding to understand the evolution of sedimentary basins. The purpose of this study is to present a three-dimensional stochastic model of the Apiuna Turbiditic Complex, Itajai Basin (Brazil) derived from surface sedimentological data. Additionally, this study aims to demonstrate a methodology for the preparation f outcrop data to use in three-dimensional modeling. We digitalized the data obtained in the outcrops into composite and parameterized profiles. However, due to data scarcity, it arises the demand for using geostatistical pre-processing techniques. The declustering technique was used considering that the primary lithology was underrepresented. We build a three-dimensional architectural trend to represent the sedimentary facies more reliably. Boolean Object Modeling was applied to model the architectural elements; while, Sequential Indicator Simulation was applied to model the sedimentary facies distribution. The technique to work with data of outcrops was effective, demonstrating the distribution of either the sedimentary bodies or the distribution of conditioned facies to the architectural elements. The stochastic model of the area was consistent with the geological interpretation of outcrops. The application of techniques of data processing using statistics and geological interpretations (e.g., trend construction from data obtained in the field) is of great aid in the construction of the three-dimensional geological model. Stochastic modeling coupled with the geostatistical treatment of the data and the statistical analysis of the model, through validation by the classification of best estimate and probable, is of considerable assistance in the activities of the petroleum industry for the allocation and drilling of wells.
