Discrete element modeling of fractured media using conforming and adaptive particle assemblies

Abstract

Through discrete element simulations", we investigate the hydraulic and mechanical behaviors of particle models that explicitly integrate structural discontinuities in their fabric. The objective is to assess the physical relevance of particle models generated with the constructive algorithm proposed in a previous work. For that purpose, we present a series of numerical experiments performed on particle assemblies presenting different structural properties. The particle assemblies can be built (1) homogeneous, (2) conforming to structural discontinuities, and (3) with adaptive size distributions around structures of interest. By analyzing the emergent behaviors of particle models subjected to different loadings," we highlight the benefits and drawbacks of structural enhancements with regards to geomechanical modeling.
