2.5D Unstructured gridding

Abstract

In the last Gocad Meeting, we presented a method to build fully unstructured grids adapted to the needs of the last generation of flow simulators. In many cases, an unstructured K direction is not mandatory and there is substantial time and memory benefit for using some structuring, even in a single direction. In this paper, we propose a new data structure dedicated to 2,5D grids and more compact in memory than the fully unstructured grids representation. Generally, the petro-physical properties characterizing the oil or gas reservoirs are estimated in grids of higher resolution than the grids used by flow simulators. For that raison, they need to be upscaled. The concept of geo-chronological model introduced by Mallet [13] gives us opportunities to develop and implement methods to both model and upscale physical properties in polyhedral extruded grids.
