Abstract

A runtime link has been established between GEOCAP (Shell Group's proprietary 3-D static reservoir modelling package) and GOCAD. This runtime coupling of GEOCAP and GOCAD was achieved without changing the data model or infrastructure of either application, and represents a signmcant stage in the connectivity between our in-house proprietary software and third party applications. There was sorne initial concern that the modifications of the triangulated surfaces of 'GOCAD for use in GEOCAP would be prohibitive for linking the two systems. This proved, however, not to be the case. This link was established to prototype a new modelling taol for enhanced control of complex geological shapes by using the GOCAD application. Prototyping was achieved over a very short time period (less than three weeks), and has revealed the possibility that GOCAD could take over sorne specifie tasks within the Shen Group modelling environrnent, without significant modification ta either system. It is envisaged, that results of GOCAD functionality could be integrated into the GEOCAP environment at several different stages in the modelling process. For example, we have utilised GOCAD's sophisticated functionality for interpolation of properties along a curvilinear grid. We export a body, such as a channel, from GEOCAP into GOCAD where it is treated as a gshape, and interpolate properties (porosity, for example) using the anisotropy imparted by the GOCAD mesh. Results of GOCAD property assignment are then transposed to a regular grid in GEOCAP, and the distribution of properties is preserved in a voxel model. It is planned that the GOCAD interface may be customized and specialized for direct run-time access from with the GEOCAP environment, to achieve several different and distinct tasks during the modelling process.
