Faulted Stratigraphic Grids: Direct Construction

in: Proc. $17^{th}$ Gocad Meeting, Nancy

Abstract

In the most general case of building faulted curvilinear grids, the SGrid eut algorithm offers a precise solution. As any intersection algorithm, this implies quite heavy computations, relying on complex data structures. Moreover, the grids generated using this method can present irregularities which may cause numerical instabilities in flow simulators. In sorne cases studied in this paper, the grid is to be constructed from a reference horizon, as for instance the top or the bottom of a reservoir. In this case, it is possible to create the faulted grid directly, relying on both a parameterization of the reference horizon and topological information. A side effect of this latter point is that the grid fits the reference horizon more precisely. This technique can be easily combined with parameterizing and morphing tools, resulting in a powerfull, modular and highly customizable gridding method.
