A Unified Model for Reservoir Characterization

Abstract

Scientists love nothing more than unifying theories bridging the gaps between isolated islands of knowledge. By many aspects, the GeoChron theoretical model introduced in the past few years appears as a possible framework to unify (apparently very different) problems, such as interpolation of reservoir properties, fracture characterization, upscaling of permeability and shale-gouge ratio estimation. New applications of this model can even be envisioned in seismic interpretation and uncertainty assessment, making GeoChron a serious candidate to unify all the different aspects of reservoir characterization. The primary purpose of this article is to present an improved version of the GeoChron model. New matrix notations allow some proof to be presented in an elegant and concise way. Using these notations, proofs which were not given previously are presented for the first time. A secondary purpose is to improve the link with applications such as upscaling shale-gouge ratio and fracturation. Concerning fracturation, a key missing step in the proof of a result presented last year is added while proposals for new upscaling techniques and shalegouge ratio estimation are introduced.
