Simulation of channels in reservoir modeling: a new approach

Abstract

This work describes a new methodology for channel simulation. The proposed algorithm simulates stochastically on by one the channels conditioned by well data. It is based on the simulation of a pure random field added to a potential surface from which iso-potential curves are extracted. The simulated objects are continuous between two extremities and constrained by two boundaries surfaces (channel-belt). They do not derive from any current geometric shape like sinusoids, and channel axis can be multi-valuate. Moreover all well data crossing or not a channel are scrupulously taken into account. Levees or deltaic lobes can be appended to the channel in the same simulation. This new methodology gives faster results and more realistic channels compared to the previously proposed object based methods.
